Mulch calculation formula

square feet x (depth in inches / 12) = cubic feet

Worked example: A 500 sq ft bed at 3 inches deep needs 125 cu ft before allowance. With 10% extra, that is 137.5 cu ft, 5.09 cu yd, or 69 two-cubic-foot bags.

How to measure for mulch

For a rectangle, multiply length by width. Break curved or irregular beds into smaller rectangles and circles, calculate each area, and add the results. Measure only the areas that will actually receive mulch.

Choosing a mulch depth

Use	Typical depth	Notes
Refreshing an existing bed	1 to 2 inches	Check the depth already in place before adding more.
New ornamental bed	2 to 3 inches	Keep mulch away from trunks and plant crowns.
Coarse wood chips	3 to 4 inches	Large material may settle more than fine mulch.

Bags versus bulk mulch

Bags are convenient for small jobs and scattered beds. Bulk mulch is often easier for several cubic yards, but delivery minimums and pile placement matter. There are 27 cubic feet in one cubic yard.
