Flooring and Tile Calculator

Estimate flooring cartons from room dimensions, package coverage, and cutting waste. Enter the job dimensions below, then review the guide before ordering.

Flooring and Tile calculation formula

room length x room width / carton coverage x allowance = cartons
Worked example: A 15 ft by 12 ft room is 180 sq ft. At 20 sq ft per carton with 10% waste, the result is 9.9 cartons, so purchase 10 cartons.

Measure each floor area

Divide an irregular plan into rectangles and add their areas. Include closets and connected spaces receiving the same material. Do not include fixed cabinets if flooring will not run beneath them.

Choose a cutting allowance

A straight installation in a square room may use 7% to 10% extra. Diagonal layouts, patterned tile, narrow planks, and rooms with many corners can require 12% to 20%. Manufacturer instructions may specify a minimum.

Order by matching production lot

Color and texture can vary between dye lots and production runs. Buying all cartons together reduces mismatch risk and leaves replacement pieces for future repairs.

Before placing an order

Recheck field measurements, confirm the selected product's actual package coverage or density, and ask the supplier about order increments, minimum quantities, delivery limits, and return rules. Keep unlike products and assemblies in separate calculations.
